Week Commencing: Sat 07/05/2022

2 of the A-team

Some new and some regular faces turned up on Saturday, all buzzing to get started. During the walk-round lots of fish were showing themselves. The fish were very active. The key to success this week would be bait as the fish are leading up to spawing so they are hungry! I personally don’t think you can over feed them in the Road Lake. The more bait you put in, the more bites you will get. The draw happened and everyone was looking forwards to the week ahead. Let’s go……

First up in the Famous Turtles Corner was Jason Potts who had week fishing with his son ahead. Turtles had been the most productive swim for the last few weeks, so saying that he was buzzing to get in there was an understatement….. Jason decided to fish all 3 rods at 21 wraps towards the dot island. This is where the bites had been coming from for the past few weeks. 2 rods were fished on spinner rigs with wafters with his 3rd rod being fished on a solid bag. Within the first 24 hours of fishing he had landed 12 fish. Yes 12!!!!! Monday came and so did 4 more fish, the biggest being 35lb 14oz. The next  day he managed another 3 fish. In the early hours of Wednesday something special turned up, “Dylan” at 43lb 5oz. The best was yet to come when he managed to land one of the Road Lake super commons in the last hour of fishing. “Long Common” at 48lb… Jason ended the week on 27 fish. Awesome angling mate!!!!!!

Heading over to Jason’s son, Kyle Potts chose Bachelier’s for the week. He chose to fish 27 wraps towards the far margin. The fish had been showing there during the walk round, so it was the perfect place to start. It took a while before he got his first bite. His confidence went straight back up and on Wednesday something very special turned up…. “Frankie” at 52lb 4oz which is now known as Kyle’s new PB. In the early hours of Thursday he managed to pick up another nice 27lb mirror. Well done mate.

Over in Birches we had Shane Hardy setting his bivvy up. Shane is a very keen angler who definitely knows his water craft. After a quick chat to the bailiff he decided to fish all 3 rods at 18 wraps towards the wonky tree. 3 solid bags were cast over a big bed of Mainline Link boilies mixed with maize. In the early hours of Sunday he managed to slip the net under “Last Chance” at 38lb 12oz. good start!! He had to wait until Tuesday for his next bite, but what a fish it was….. “The Traveller” at 43lb 8oz, beast of a common!!!! Unfortunately this was his last action for the week. The effort was put in and a couple of nice fish rewarded him for it. I’m sure you will get into q few more fish next time mate!

One swim down from Birches James Wakefield found himself in Brambles. This swim doesn’t produce a big hit of fish in a week but it throws up the bigguns. I think the best way to approach this swim is to fish all 3 rods tight on one spot. This is what James did, fishing all 3 rods at 18 wraps just to the right hand side of the wonky tree. As said before this swim doesn’t produce many fish but it throws up the bigguns, and that is what it did for James. Big fish Thursday lived up to it’s name as he landed something very special in the early hours, “Eye-Q” at 53lb 12oz. This was his only fish for the week but what a fish it was. He came to brake he Pb and he definitely did…..

The fish were definitely hungry as the lads went through lots of bait. The fish are definitely getting ready to spawn but are still being caught. Fishing all 3 rods on one spot definitely seems to be the better tactic. Don’t be afraid to put 5kg-7kg of bait out on your first day, if you start picking fish up increase the amount to 8kg-9kg a day. I really believe you can’t feed these fish enough.

Tight Lines,
