Bailiff Comments

Week Commencing: Sat 19/03/2022

First full lake of the season…..

With the Road Lake being closed for a few months and with only 8 anglers on during the winter months it was finally time to have a full lake again (12 anglers). We had a mixed group with a few regulars and a bunch of first-time visitors to the Gigantica complex. Day time temperatures were high doubles with some cooler nights. After the walk-round with the bailiff everyone was keen to get started…..

Regular face John Allen set his stall up in Bacheliers for the week. John has fished this swim previously so was keen to get back into it. Hearing that the far margin had produced on the previous week he didn’t hesitate putting his rods out on the same spot. Maize with some 10mm boilies were spombed out. John has his own way of fishing which has proven to work in the past as his had some bigguns from the Main Lake. Size 8 hooks (yes size 8!!) with micro corn on a D-rig was fished over the big bed of bait. The first few days were very quiet…But Wednesday morning that changed when a single beep  turned out to be a 52lb 4oz mirror….. unfortunately this was John’s only fish for the week but what a fish it was!!!

Heading over to Turtles corner saw Kai Poole setting his bivvy up. The previous week it had produced quite a few fish with some decent ones amongst them. After a quick chat to the bailiff he chose to fish all 3 rods at 22wraps towards the dot island. Yellow 15mm pop-ups fished over boilies mixed with maize and hemp was Kai’s approach. After seeing a few fish boshing in the margin on Sunday morning he decided to cast a single 15mm pop-up towards them and that paid off as he landed a 10lb 8oz mirror. Few hours later and he was in again this time it felt much bigger…. “Mr Mison” at 33lb 8oz which was a new PB for Kai. After the quick success he decided to put 2 rods towards the margin and started baiting it up. Very good move as he landed another 2 fish that day. Monday morning saw something special turn up…“LouLou” at 39lb.  2nd time breaking his PB this week. Kai kept on catching steadily all week long, ending the week with 15 fish. Unfortunately no monsters turned up but I’m sure they will next time! Well done mate.

Two swims down from Turtles Corner was Kai’s dad, Phil Poole in Double Boards. The right-hand margin is an awesome feature in this swim so with no hesitation one rod went down the margin at 7 wraps with his other 2 rods out in open water. Hing-stiff rigs on all 3 rods fished over boilie, maize and hemp was the plan of attack. This rig doesn’t get used a lot on the Road Lake so it was going to be an interesting one. Phil was the first one to be off the mark this week when he managed to land a 22lb mirror on Sunday. The fish came from the margin spot. Monday saw him into his next fish, a 16lb 8oz mirror, from the margin spot again…. Tuesday was a quiet day on the fish front for Phil. Wednesday came and so did another fish, a 21lb common. The next morning saw him lose one, this happens unfortunately… Phil ended the week on 3 fish. See you next time mate.

Over in New Beach was Neiil Highw on his 2nd trip to the Road Lake. Neiil chose to fish 2 rods at 14 wraps towards the bund with his 3rd rod being fished towards the left-hand margin. Boilies mixed with maize and hemp was his bait choice for the week. Wafters on spinner rigs were fished over the top. After a few frustrating days he managed to get his rods out at 21wraps with some help from the bailiff. In the early hours of Thursday he lost one from the 21 wrap spot… It was a sign that the fish were happy feeding there, so he was confident he would get another chance. Friday morning it all came good when he managed to land a 25lb 8oz mirror. It was very hard going but I’m sure you’ll have some more fish next time!!

Next up was Pete Allen in The Goo who came to surprise his brother John. They hadn’t seen each other for 2 years…. John was definitely surprised to see him J. On the fishing front: 2 rods went straight out in front at 14 wraps with his 3rd rod close in at 5 wraps. Maize and hemp was spombed over 3 wafters. The fish didn’t seem to be in the area but Pete never lost his head and stuck to his plan. This paid off, when on his last morning he landed a stunning 29lb common….. Well done Pete!

Over in the other part of the lake a young lad named Adam Shutler had set up in Dunkerque. Adam’s tactics were to fish the 2 main spots which this swim holds. 2 rods went out at 14 wraps towards Brambles with his 3rdone at 18 wraps towards the big rock on the far margin. Mainline Cell boilies mixed with maize and hemp were spombed over 3 spinner rigs with matching Cell wafters. Monday morning saw him land his first French carp (This was his first time to France), fish named “Afterbite” at 21lb. With the next couple of days being quiet he tried a zig rig at different depths but unfortunally this didn’t result into a bite. We’re looking forwards to seeing you on your next trip mate!

Belgium guy Daan Pikaerts chose Tea Party 2 for the week. 2 rods went over towards the far margin on solid bags. A mixture of boilies mixed with maize and pellet was the loose feed. It was a very frustrating week for Daan with him only managing to catch a 10lb stockie... I'm sure you will smash it on your next trip. See you in a few months.

It was a hard weeks fishing with only 24 fish being caught. The weather wasn’t very consistent which didn’t help. The anglers put their best efforts in and definitely deserved a few more fish. See you all soon!

Tight Lines,
