Week Commencing: Sat 12/03/2022
Full Moons, Big Commons and The McMillan Show!!
After the weather on the back end of last week the lads that arrived Saturday were full of confidence and itching to get going…after a detailed walk round and a good old chinwag in the lodge we were ready to do the dreaded draw!
I must start the report off with Korda Carp Academy graduate Lewis McMillan who didn’t hesitate in dropping into New Beach even though it didn’t do a bite the week before! Taking advice from the bailiff he decided to fish all 3 rods tight at 21 wraps towards the 3 trees in the background of the bund…Fishing a multi/combi rig that he learned from his Academy coach Mark Bryant, with the ever-faithful double stacked slow sinking maize as his hookbait. Lewis didn’t take long to get amongst them landing a 34lb 4oz mirror just as dinner was being delivered on Saturday evening!! Mega start and a good sign of things to come…Lewis Baited with 10 spombs of hemp, corn, crushed Cell and liquids every night when he got back from dinner and then topped up the spot with 5 spombs after every fish…Lewis consistently caught throughout the week, but the real prize was going to grace his landing net on Friday morning! After not catching for 24hours Lew decided to put some bait out a little bit past his spot to try and draw the fish out from the snags…this change of baiting approach made the difference! Full Moon in the sky and a monster of a common in the net at 7am on Friday…the biggest common in the lake! The mighty Mable at a whopping 59lb 12oz absolutely obliterating his P.B! All the lads came round to witness this capture which made it even more special…Lewis had a crazy week landing 1xdouble 5x20s 7x30s 2x40s and a 50 totalling 16 fish to cap off a cracking weeks angling! Well in mate.
Next up on the McMillan show is Lews Dad Simon Mcmillan who pulled out ball 1 in the draw and got himself round into Turtles Corner as quickly as possible. Simon carried on exactly where the lads last week left off fishing at 22 wraps towards the dot island and introducing 20 spombs of corn, maize and hemp straight away certainly kept the fish in the area for longer! Simons first bite came at midnight on Saturday but the next bite on Sunday afternoon was the first P.B buster of the week with a 46lb 12oz common named Polly smashing his Common personal best out of the park! Next on the list was a P.B mirror which came in the early hours of Monday morning in the shape of Broken Tail at 48lb! Absolutely smashing it…Simon kept the bait going in and continued to catch regularly through the week with his 7am bite time almost repeating to the minute every morning! The smaller fish did seem to move onto the bait as Simon was catching quite a few 20lbers..but who’s complaining! One more biggun was on the cards though and came right at last knockings on Saturday morning landing Eddy at 44lb 8oz and capped off a fine weeks angling in Turtles!! Simon also fished Double stacked Slow Sinking Maize on Spinner rigs, nice and simple but massively effective!
Peter Golding started off in Birches but after Lewis catching so quickly in the Beach and nobody being in Decoy he made the move early doors on Sunday morning…this was the correct choice! After a chat with Steve about rigs, baiting and a few others bits and pieces he was all set with rigs in the zone! 24 hours passed and Monday morning produced 2 fish in quick succession! The first being a 20lb common and the next one being a lot bigger! Nutmeg at 40lb was the prize and another P.B smashed! Peter baited with maize, hemp and crushed cell fishing at 14 wraps towards the corner of the bund, fishing D rigs with yep you guessed it … Slow Sinking Maize being the hookbait that seems to be doing the business at this time of year! Well done on your P.B mate
Toby Wyatt dropped into a familiar swim in the shape of Tea Party 1 which he had fished on his previous trip with good success…deciding to fish all 3 rods at 21 wraps towards the big trees just to the right of Turtles Corner he baited consistently with crushed boilie, maize and hemp. Toby fished spinners with Slow Sinking Maize over the top and managed a few bites on Monday morning all in quick succession. Recasting the rod and getting some more bait out after each fish helped keep them there for longer! Toby beat his P.B with his 3rd fish of the morning in the shape of “Le Flair” at 44lb 4oz and then the fish seemed to move away from the area. Toby managed to land one more for the week on the Wednesday finishing up with 4 fish for the week!
Mr Karl Ryder decided on Bachelliers fishing alongside his brother and Dad who were in the Poo and the Goo! After losing a fish early on he decided to rebait and get the rods back out on the spot at 29 wraps into the corner…20 minutes later he landed a small common! Then deciding to rest the swim for a bit he recast for an hour before dinner as fish started showing over the spot again which resulted in another very quick bite! Landing a 38lb Mirror! Karl fished German rigs with 2 pieces of pop up fake maize, baiting from the bank with hemp, maize and cell crumb! Unfortunately the boys in Poo and Goo didn’t manage to get amongst them this week but next year there will definitely be a score to settle! Lovely meeting the three of you! Top lads
Dean Jones dropped into Tea Party 2 and concentrated all 3 rods at 21wraps to the margins left of the Dot island, fishing Spinners with Slow Sinking Maize he managed to land 3 fish for the week including a new P.B! The fish seemed to stay more in Turtles water for the week but when they did turn up on Dean he took advantage and had a few! Baiting every day after dinner with 10 spombs with crumbed cell, hemp and maize…
What a cracking bunch of lads to look after this week everyone had a good old laugh and we smashed 5 personal bests! Onwards and upwards looking forward to seeing you all again soon!
With 44 fish landed up to 59lb 12oz the Road lake fish are starting to wake up, with some proper spring weather forecast, the fish should really start to get a munch on! Let’s see what happens next week
Until then,
Tight lines,
Steve
